Curtis had been tossing around the idea of getting his own place when his mom found out about Neighborhood Finance Corporation, a company out of Des Moines that now served their city of Cedar Rapids.

The forgivable loan meant he would be able to remodel both the upstairs and downstairs bathrooms, put in new faucets, vanity, toilet, flooring and paint the three-bedroom, 1,500 square foot home he purchased. And as long as it was completed within 6 months.
“During the process, I was open to different types of homes. I just wanted to make sure it was a solid house that I could put my spin on and make it my own.”
So, when he found one on a double lot with two-stall garage and concrete pad, he didn’t let the pink and green bathroom or teal carpet get in his way.
He says, “I had the old carpet ripped out the first day. I tell people not to worry about the pink and green bathroom, it’s going away soon!”
Curtis closed on June 5thand had a meeting with the contractor to get final details to start the renovation process. He says figuring out how the contractors were going to get paid was a little confusing at first until NFC explained everything.
“Both Lynn Barrett and Taran White were amazing to work with. Lynn even got on a call with me after hours to help finalize the approval.”
Curtis says securing the forgivable loan to make necessary improvements made him feel confident about his decision to purchase his first home. “If I hadn’t gotten it, I would have been a lot more worried about money and wondering what might happen if repairs didn’t get made.”
