Homebuyer Education

Homebuyers receiving NFC down payment assistance must attend a HUD Approved homebuyer education class (online or in-person) prior to the loan closing. 

The sessions include:

  • Are You Ready To Buy A Home
  • Managing Your Money
  • Understanding Credit
  • Getting A Mortgage Loan
  • Shopping For A Home
  • Keeping Your Home and Managing Your Finances

 

Homebuyers can choose the following ways to receive the required 8-hours of homebuyer education. There may be a cost to some homebuyer education options. Please talk with your first mortgage lender to determine if they have additional requirements.

ONLINE COURSE

Available in English for freeHomeView™ is a certified online provider of homebuyer education through Fannie Mae. For more information, please visit Fannie Mae’s HomeView.

ONLINE AND IN-PERSON

Homebuyer Education Partners may have additional options for in person and online homebuyer education.  Contact the agency for more information on services and possible fees.

Save time prior to your purchase agreement and get your home buyer education completed. It is good for 12 months. You may even be eligible for additional down payment and closing cost assistance if you complete your Homebuyer Education ahead of time.

In Des Moines: HOME, Inc. offers Homeownership Counseling and Supportive Services to help prospective homeowners determine if they are ready to purchase, and develop a plan to do so. Their Homeownership Readiness Assessment helps identify barriers to home buying, and develop a plan to eliminate those barriers. In Cedar Rapids: Horizons, A Family Service Alliance provides budget, debt management, and financial literacy counseling and education. Financial counselors will listen to individual needs and concerns, provide honest and accurate financial assessment, help identify individual goals and develop plans to meet those goals, and offer support along the way. J2H CLASSES AND EVENTS

In addition to receiving a certificate for 8-hours of homebuyer education, you will need to Complete a J2H class or attend a J2H event to receive a Journey to Homeownership Certificate from NFC or an Ambassador of the J2H program. Click here for information on J2H classes and events
