NFC is hiring a Staff Accountant for our Des Moines office.

Summary of Position Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Vice-President of Finance and Administration, responsibilities will include but are not limited to independently completing routine accounting functions, assisting with financial analysis, and project management. In this role you may be asked to assist in the accounting close process, IRS tax filings, year-end audit, property construction management, and special projects as needed and as applicable to maintain proper separation of duties pursuant to internal control protocols.

This position will focus on the various Loan Close Accounting processes for Polk County and Cedar Rapids loan programs, General Journal Entry processing and Month End duties, which include but are not limited to Vendor Account Reconciliations.

Specific Job Functions:

  • Process all accounting checks and journal entries in a mortgage loan transaction and special programs attached as necessary.
  • Responsible for reconciling all customer borrower escrow accounts.
  • Ensure processed documents are included in the appropriate accounting period.
  • Responsible to process invoices for weekly payments out of various bank accounts, including operating bills, all payments related to loan processing, and expense reimbursements using proper account assignments, deadlines, and funding source. Produce checks as necessary.
  • Responsible for journal entries related to cash disbursements and cash/credit receipts.
  • Assist with maintenance of the vendor file for 1099 year end reporting. (Receives W-9s to update but does not maintain the form filing).
  • Responsible for selected period close processes that may include recording journal entries, reconciling loan product closings, and creating accounting support reports.
  • Conduct appropriate communication with external vendors including assisting CPA firm during audits.
  • Support bookkeeping compliance of expenditures associated with federal grant funds.
  • Provide bookkeeping support to other team members that may include invoicing, billing, processing weekly accounts payable, always ensuring appropriate documentation.
  • Perform other job related duties as required by internal control protocols.
  • Perform special projects as requested by the Vice-President of Finance and Administration.

Experience and Skills to Succeed at this Position:

· The ability to create long- and short-term plans, including setting targets for milestones and adhering to deadlines to avoid using contingency plans by effectively using resource allocation, analysis, and execution.

· The ability to analyze data and information and present it to external and internal partners.

· Analyze and verify internal consistency, completeness, and arithmetic accuracy of account documents, investigate questionable data, and makes adjustments.

· Work requires a thorough knowledge of bookkeeping principles and the use of independent judgment when procedures may not be well defined.

· Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and related software.

· Effective organizational and communicative skills, time management, and customer service skills required.

· Comfortable in a multi-tasking work environment and must have good oral communication skills.

· Ability to perform a broad range of accounting and clerical functions with responsibilities for independently completing beginning to end accounting functions on selected accounting records in a lean accounting department of a nonprofit mortgage bank.

· Knowledgeable with various financial reporting and analysis techniques, appropriate use of debits and credits, able to complete complex reconciliations, and comfortable presenting to internal and external customers.

Job Requirements:

  • 4+ years of relevant full cycle accounting experience required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting strongly preferred; Associates Degree with subsequent experience in lieu of Bachelors.
  • Experience in complex or multi-company environment preferred.
  • Effectively communicate confidential information with a variety of personnel.
  • Proven ability to work in a deadline driven environment.
  • Detail oriented self-starter who can work independently.
  • Comfortable leveraging Microsoft Excel.
  • Must have reliable transportation, driver’s license, and insurance (NFC will provide mileage reimbursement).
  • Ability to navigate Accounting Software systems.
  • Travel outside of the Des Moines metro (5% or less) will be required to attend appropriate training and conference events.
